Facelift

Dr Lewis has a wide experience in facelifting. He trained in New York with some of the leaders in this field and has attended many international and American conferences where this subject is discussed. He does not perform thread lifts or any of the ancillary procedures like Botox or the injection of dermal fillers, but has a wide experience in the surgical correction of facial aging. He believes this is the only long lasting solution for such problems but respects the fact that the ancillary measures can be used to supplement surgery. He has direct access to practitioners who can perform these procedures if necessary.

Facelifting involves the use of incisions which are essentially in the scalp covered with hair with only a small incision in front of the ear which in majority of cases disappears from a practical point of view. The skin and muscle layers of the face are elevated to their preoperative position with careful attention to producing as natural look as possible avoiding the “wind swept” look which spoils some results. The operation requires about 2 – 4 weeks recovery period depending on whether the eyelids are operated on at the same time. This latter delays return to social activity because of the bruising and minor shape changes which occur in the early post operative period.

Eyelid surgery

Upper Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery is very beneficial for people from quite an early age. Many patients seek help in their 30’s and 40’s for the early changes particularly involving the upper eyelids where laxity of skin muscle and fat produces the typical hooded appearance associated with aging and tiredness. It is a relatively straight forward procedure to remove such loose folds of skin in an operation which can be done as day surgery and requires about a week to ten days recovery. Scarring is inconsequential.

Lower Eyelid Surgery

Lower eyelid surgery is done less frequently, usually for bagginess or wrinkling. The incisions once again produce scars which will disappear over the months. This surgery has to be done extremely carefully so as to avoid an “operated” round eyed appearance. The recovery period is longer, taking about one month before the appearances become normal again.

Nasal surgery

Nasal surgery can be done for developmental abnormalities, particularly a hump on the bridge of the bridge of the nose or a large tip or just a generally an oversized nose. It can also be done for the effects of injury. In the later case the surgery is more difficult because injury is often associated with scarring of the tissues and significant distortion on the interior architecture of the nose with deflection to either side. This is more difficult to correct.

Dr Lewis has extensive experience in rhinoplasty surgery and performs the procedures by either the closed method involving incisions through the nostrils, or the open method which involves an incision across the small central strut of the nose near the nostrils. This scar disappears in time. The nose will need a plaster for a week and then a few weeks need to pass before the appearances do not betray the presence of surgery. The results are not always good after the first procedure and there is a small incidence of re-operation to correct minor or more serious problems. This is done about 12 months later.
