Anaesthesia for your surgery

Dr Lewis is supported by a team of consultant anaesthetists, all of whom have gained specialist qualifications in anaesthesia after first completing their medical degree. Anaesthesia is an important component of your surgery, and there are several options available depending on the type of surgery planned for you. Dr Lewis will discuss with you whether local anaesthetic, sedation (called ‘twilight ‘in the lay community) or general anaesthesia is suitable for your procedure. On the day of surgery your anaesthetist will discuss with you the most suitable anesthetic plan for your surgery, taking into account the type of procedure, your current health status and your medical and surgical history. If you have specific concerns regarding your anaesthetic please speak with Dr Lewis and, if Dr Lewis thinks it prudent, an appointment may be arranged with your anaesthetist before your surgery.

It is vitally important when it comes to ensuring your safety that you fully disclose to Dr Lewis and to your anaesthetist your medical history, both past and present, including exactly what medications you are taking currently. Frank disclosure of drinking and smoking habits and any health effects resulting from these are also important.

Equally important when it comes to your safety is that you adhere strictly to any instructions regarding the pre-operative period such as fasting from food and drink, cessation of specific medications or when to take medication.

Your safety is paramount and so Dr Lewis chooses to operate only in facilities that are appropriately accredited by the N.S.W department of Health. This accreditation ensures that the facility adheres to the highest standards in all aspects of your care.

Please be aware that a separate fee will be charged for your anaesthetic. In many cases this fee will be advised along with Dr Lewis’ fees when you book your surgery. In other cases if you would like an estimate of the anaesthetic fee you may contact your anaesthetist. The staff at Dr Lewis’ rooms can provide these contact details upon request.
